Khat effects  

It contains cathinone, a phenethylamine substance which is said to induce mild euphoria and excitement. The stimulant properties of khat are similar to, but less powerful than, amphetamines, having the effect of speeding up your mind and body.

The upside:

  1. As khat is bought in leaf form it isn’t possible to cut it with anything
  2. Creates a state of euphoria and stimulation
  3. Increases alertness, excitement, and energy
  4. Although it's a stimulant, many users report a feeling of calm if it's chewed over a few hours. Some describe it as being 'blissed out'.

The downside:

Health risks can include:

  • Not sleeping very well
  • Loss of appetite
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Feeling over important
  • Constipation
  • High blood pressure
  • A faster heart rate
  • Depression
  • Psychosis
  • Dehydration
  • Hallucination

Long term:

  1. An increase in the severity of psychological problems (such as depression, anxiety, irritation, and more severe psychological problems)
  2. Impotence
  3. Gastrointestinal tract problems, such as constipation
  4. Inflammation of the mouth
  5. Oral cancer
